Inside PageOutside Page SIGHT INVESTIGATIONS
The
Clarksburg Lions Club provides financial assistance to individuals in
need of eye exams and glasses but do not have the financial resources
to obtain such medical assistance. Club members interview applicants
to ensure that their situation will benefit from the Clubs's
assistance. The investigation is fairly extensive and requires the
dedicated members to interview candidates and arrange for services.
EYE GLASS DROP OFF CENTERS
The Clarksburg Lions have drop boxes at the following locations:
- Court House on the ground floor by the Sheriff's Tax Collection Office
- United Hospital Center by the ground floor elevators
- Maplewood Senior Living Community in Bridgeport
MOBILE EYE SIGHT PROJECT
District
29-i is now using the Mobile Eye Unit more frequently than before. We
need volunteers to learn to provide eye screening to people who would
other wise have no opportunity or access to such screening. Contact
Clarksburg Lions at our e-mail address - clarksburglions@gmail.com.
On
August 16th, Clarksburg Lions examined 32 people, of which, 13 will
receive information on getting additional professional eye examinations
and glasses.
On November 6th, the Clarksburg Lions Club manned the WV Mobile Eye
Unit at a local health fair at the Bridgeport Convention Center. Over
40 people had their eye sight checked for vision and glaucoma.

FLAG DAY
Every February, the Clarksburg Lions visits the first grade classes at Nutter Fort Elementary School and St. Mary's School. Lions
explain to the young people about the American flag, what the symbols
represent, and how important we pay respect to the flag. We also give
each student their very own American flag and a flyer explaining the
flag for them to share the information with their families.
FOOD BANK COLLECTIONS
The Lions frequently collect from members and the public can goods and non-perishable items for the local food banks.
West Virginia Lions Youth Camps and Exchange Scholarship Contest
Each year, the West Virginia Lions Youth Camps
& Exchange Program sponsors young West Virginians
in exchanges to other countries. In addition, we provide host families
in our state for students from other countries. All the
exchanges were very successful and memorable experiences for those
involved.
YOUTH OUTREACH
Here are a few Youth Outreach items that have been accomplished.
- Sponsored two boys to Boys State: Justin Todd and Cole Kirby both of RCB High
- Sponsored two girls to Girls State: Emily Green and Bethany Dzielski of RCB High
- Awarded two $500 scholarships: Kaitlin Kemner of RCB and Maria Sellas of BHS
- Made a
donation of $100 toward the trip of RCB student Byranna DeFazio to a
national student council training event in Colorado (she is the only
one from WV.)
- Provided
funding for one student to attend the WV Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership
Conference in Charleston in May. (They have not provided me the name
yet, but it was to be a student from a Clarksburg high school.)
SPORTS CLINIC
Lions Club members volunteered to help at the county-wide
sports physical clinic held at the local high school. Over 1,000 free physicals are provided.
Hats off to our Lions and the other volunteer organizations for such a
successful community project.
LIONS PARTY FOR VETERANS
The Clarksburg
Lions Club holds an annual Christmas Party at the Veterans Hospital. Lion Members conduct bingo games and pass out winnings. Members also provide pizza, soft drinks, and
cookies. The Veterans appreciate the Lions visiting them during the year.
SALVATION ARMY
During the holiday season, the Clarksburg Lions assisted the Salvation Army in ringing the bell outside K-Mart, Walmart, and other locations in the area. This provided relief to the regular bell ringers. Lions help the Salvation Army to collect needed funds to assist those in need.
ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY
Ed and Georgia Jones have been picking up trash for the Adopt-A-Highway Fall "Pickup" for the club. As always it has been reported to Charleston and the local State Road Department in the name of Clarksburg Lions. An example of the effort is the following:
