United Way of Harrison County Loaned Executive, Susan Berry, and Campaign Chair Tom Gorrell spoke about the United Way’s current fund raising campaign.
Ms. Berry spoke about the efforts to solicit help from local companies and agencies. There are 23 agencies in Harrison County receiving support. The economy has had a negative impact on fund raising as more people are being hit with the down-turned economy. Many people need help in managing their finances for the first time. In addition to the parents losing their jobs and needing help, financial stress impacts the children too.

Mr. Gorrell discussed the United Way’s administration of funds, indicating that only 8 percent of funds collected go to administrative costs. Agencies must apply for grants each year and are audited to ensure they have a need. It takes a lot of paperwork before an agency receives funding. Finally, Mr. Gorrell suggested that if people can’t make financial contributions, they can volunteer their time to help the various agencies.
